What key business lesson can we learn from the story of The Jersey Boys?

My wife and I watched The Jersey Boys movie the other night. It was great by the way but I'm guessing the broadway is much better. While I was watching, it came to me that there was a great business lesson to be learned from a 1960's pop band from the other side of the tracks in New Jersey. That is, other than getting into debt with the mob, something that wouldn't be recommended in any business model.

In the early days, the original group comprised of Tommy DeVito, Nick DeVito, and friend Nick Massi. They discovered and added a teenager with a very unique, falsetto voice, Frankie Castelluccio, who soon became Frankie Valli. Still, they struggled in obscurity, playing in smoky bars while changing their name and sound several times without any measure of success.

One day, friend Joe Pesci, takes singer-song writer, Bob Gardio to a performance and Bob is very impressed with Frankie's voice. After an impromtu audition, and over the objection of Tommy, he becomes a member of the band.

Even with this new talent introduced to the group, they are still relegated to playing in any dive they can find and singing backing vocals in Bob Crewe's studio. After getting totally frustrated, Crewe insists that they have an "identity crisis" and need to make a firm decision on a name and a sound. The band name themselves after The Four Seasons bowling alley, and Gardio writes them three songs that fit Frankie's distinctive voice, "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry", and "Walk Like A Man". These songs propel them to stardom with many more that follow and the rest, as they say, is history.

So what can we learn from this? Seems to me it's very clear. We always hear a lot about the importance of finding and doing business with the right people, a trusted partner. I truly believe that is true. We must find and build the right support structure for our business but what is the "right" partner? In the case of The Four Seasons, they had the "right" partners in Gardio and Crewe but weren't using them correctly for optimum success. It wasn't until Gardio and Crewe wrote new songs taylored for Frankie and the band that they tasted lasting success.

So then, it is about the "right" (song writer/producer) trusted partner providing the "right" (song) taylored solution that propels both businesses to lasting success.
